Chinese Almond Cookies

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup lard
1/2 cup margarine
1 slightly beaten egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon almond extract
24 blanched almonds, halves

In mixing bowl stir together flour, sugar, soda and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in lard and margarine till mixture resembles cornmeal. Combine egg, milk and almond extract; add to flour mixture. Mix well. Shape dough into 1-inch balls and place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Place an almond half atop each cookie and press to flatten slightly. Bake in 325 degree oven for 16 to 18 minutes or til done. Cool on rack. Makes 4 dozen cookies.
